As a parent one of our greatest desires is for our kids to be successful! Successful in school, in life, in what ever they want to be and accomplish.
However you don't just have to hope and cross your fingers that your kids will be successful, there IS something you can do!
Ready for the secret?
The secret to having children being successful and excelling in school is because their parents read to them.
That’s right, reading aloud to your children has been proven to bring life-long benefits! It improves vocabulary, comprehension, reading ability, etc.—and it just gets better.
Researchers talk about the importance of reading aloud
In a 1985 report called, “Becoming a Nation of Readers,” the researchers concluded that, “the single most important activity for building knowledge for their [child’s] eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children.”
This study was published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, with the lead author, Jessica Logan Ph.D.
The study was conducted to find out how many more words a child heard from newborn to the age of 5 if a parent read to them. The results are shocking!
Results from parents reading aloud to their children
When a parent reads to their child 1 to 2 times per week, that child hears 63,000 words by the time that child reaches kindergarten. I thought, “Oh wow, that’s great!”, but listen to this:
When a parent reads one book a day to their child, that child will hear over 290,000 words by the time they reach kindergarten. That is more than 4x the amount of words! Amazing!
But hold onto your seats because this next statistic is about to blow your socks off: If a parent increases the number of books to five per day—and we are only talking about board books for ages 0-2 and picture books for ages 3-5—that child will have heard over 1.4 million words by the age of 5.
Let me repeat, 1.4 million words by age 5!
Just think of that for a moment—by the time your son or daughter is five, they will have heard more words than all the Harry Potter books combined and then some! (like 400,000-more-words some) WOW!
So the secret is simple—read aloud to your kids!
And it’s never too early to start reading to your children. Start reading to them every day from the time they are born. It will make a difference! (It’s been proven 🙂)
Here’s to your child’s success!
Cheers,
